The ways that many of us work, learn, interact with each other, and experience the world are all radically different than they were a year ago. Never has it been so clear how much we live in and through phone and computer screens -- how mediated and vicarious much of our lives are. We've all adjusted to a form of day-to-day life that is shaped as much by what we don't or can't do as what we can do, modes of vicariousness abound. Like literature more broadly, poetry has long trafficked in vicarious life: not only do readers take part vicariously in the mode of life staged in the poem, but there are also a number of poems that focus on experiences that the speaker of the poem didn't get to have, or were left out of, or only experienced second-hand. We'll spend some time on a small handful of texts in order to get a sense of how poetry, as it always does, might help us to think about our lives --- especially at such a strange and uncertain time.Thursday, April 29 2:00pm-3:00pmRegister HereMaterials Science and Engineering Student Panel MSE students from all years will be available to answer all your questions about Berkeley and the Materials Science and Engineering Department.
